MLT Receives Operating Grant from Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC)
The Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) has granted $1.34 million in funding to artists and arts programs across the state for fiscal year 2015.
These funds were awarded in 46 Mississippi counties, ranging from operating support for museums and community arts centers to small grants that assist schools with bringing in guest artists. The grants will be awarded to 139 different organizations and schools and 42 to individual artists.
Among the recipients was the Meridian Little Theatre, which was awarded an $18,375 grant. The money will be used to supplement the operating costs of MLT. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“The creative economy has never been more vibrant than it is today in the communities across Mississippi,” said Dr. Tom Pearson, executive director at MAC. “This agency is honored to play a small role in assisting these organizations to continue their work of reinforcing the value of the arts and the role they play in creative place-making and economic development.”
The Meridian Little Theatre is one of the largest nonprofit community theaters in the state. Their mission is to create and provide a diverse community theater that enriches, educates and entertains the people of east Mississippi and west Alabama. Four main stage plays, a children’s production, and a dinner theatre are presented each season.
In addition, MLT offers workshops and special events for the community and surrounding area.
AUDITIONS FOR IRVING BERLIN'S "WHITE CHRISTMAS"
The Meridian Little Theatre announces auditions for the timeless musical, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas on October 20 and 21 at 6:30 p.m. The play is based on the 1954 film classic about two World War II vets that have become partners in a song-and-dance act after the war. Looking for love, they follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters to a gig at a Vermont lodge, which happens to be owned by their former army commander General Waverly. Performances are December 11-17!
Plus, several additional smaller roles of various ages (including children 9-12) and a chorus that requires some singing and dancing
Those auditioning should be prepared to sing a 30 – 40 second song from the show or from a well- known show tune. A piano accompanist will be available. Bring your own sheet music if not from White Christmas.
There will be scene reading auditions from the script, plus dance auditions.
